What is an Active Transportation Master Plan?

An Active Transportation Master Plan is a functional master plan that is developed by municipalities to provide additional detail on the planning, design and implementation of on and off-road walking, cycling and self-propelled forms of transportation. It clarifies the vision and objectives of the Town's Official Plan and provides specific infrastructure recommendations that support the realization of Town and Regional priorities.

Why is Halton Hills doing this Master Plan?

The purpose of this Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) is to:

  • Develop a network of continuous and connected routes made up of on and off-road facilities that prioritize safety and consider a range of users;
  • Strengthen the Town’s integrated transportation system to achieve the benefits of multi-modal travel and first-last mile active travel;
  • Accommodate varying trip types and purposes by linking key destinations such as schools, community centres and future mobility hubs; and
  • Address barriers to active transportation such as trucking routes, topography, missing links, environmental features, etc.

I like the plans. There are a number of great hiking trails in or around Georgetown and it would be great if they were better-connected, so it's good to see a Cedarvale-to-Hungry Hollow connection for the short term.Good to see AT routes that go from many places in Georgetown to the GO station.I like what seems to be an improved focus on enabling people to accomplish productive trips with AT - I don't see the value in giving people bike lanes to simply ride around a circuit within their neighbourhood. A number of bike lanes are a road to nowhere, which isn't going to reduce many car trips.

Great to see an ambitious plan with lots of new active transportation facilities. I hope funding becomes available to implement some of the projects sooner. The connections to the Caledon Rail Trail, the bike facility along Guelph Street and Mountainview Road should be high priority. Great work!

The proposed additions in town are encompassing of large areas which is great. Would love to see a way of connecting Acton and Georgetown through an active transportation root that is safe for families. The signed roads are a good start but seem to be more for adult bicyclers.

Good to see that active transportation is being reviewed. This is very important as it leads to less people depending on cars, which would reduce vehicles on the roads and create less people having to speed on our roadways. Nice to see a lot of proposed facilities and routes which will provide connectivity to both Acton and Georgetown.
