Consultation has concluded

Last year, the Town of Halton Hills initiated a survey to determine residents’ level of interest for keeping backyard chickens in urban residential areas (Acton, Georgetown), hamlets (Glen Williams, Norval) and rural clusters (Ashgrove, Ballinafad, Bannockburn, Crewson’s Corners, Henderson’s Corners, Hornby, Limehouse, Silvercreek and Terra Cotta).

Over 700 people responded to the survey and these results were presented to Town Council.

Currently, the Town of Halton Hills Responsible Pet Owner’s By-law 94-077 restricts the keeping of chickens only to properties that are zoned as agricultural.

Town Council directed staff to prepare draft regulations that might be applicable should the by-law be amended to permit chickens in the areas described above.

On October 4, 2021, Halton Hills Town Council approved the keeping of backyard hens. Read the regulations contained in the staff report.

It is anticipated that the by-law change will be brought forward in 2022 at which time the backyard chickens program will be open to residents.

Stay tuned for more updates.
