Acton Fairy Lake - affordable housing

Everyone should have access to safe, appropriate and affordable housing. However, communities across Ontario are facing a housing crisis; and Halton Hills is no exception.

In keeping with the Shaping Growth priority in the Town’s Strategic Plan, Halton Hills recognizes the importance of facilitating housing that is affordable and accessible in order to meet the needs of its current and future residents.

Affordable housing is a priority in Halton Hills, and is currently addressed throughout the Official Plan, Secondary Plans, Community Sustainability Strategy, and Strategic Plan.

We want to hear from you. Share your thoughts on what affordable housing means to you and how the Town can provide appropriate and attainable housing for all.

There is a desperate need forSenior’s affordable accommodation in Acton. Many Seniors have to move out of town. There is a desperate situation in Acton. HELP!

Affordable housing would mean being able to get out of a horrible living situation. It would mean being able to raise my autistic non verbal child where he wouldn't have an adult waging war against him. I would give anything to be able to give my son a home where he would be safe, where I could actually take him to play outside without my being scared a drunk or high driver was going to kill him. I'm on a fixed income and if I want my child to have a safe home I'm having to move 3+ hours away from Halton Hills.

A sliding scale, with the max being 30% of a person/family's income. It should be designed as such that the resident feels empowered and safe.

To get and keep housing ! Everyone has the right to a place they can call home on any budget !
Rent should be 30% of income - what is the Region doing to help make this happen ? Programs : renovation and 2nd suites / RGI/ Subsidy/ COHB (how did the Region apply these funds) / Rent up programs
Educate LL - educate tenants- especially with new legislation
A lot of money has been transferred to municipalities to deal with homelessness and lack of affordable sustainable housing - for Halton - what new builds are planned or partnerships have been developed to ensure the Region is meeting targets of the strategic plan.

Everyone has the right to a safe home no matter the budget ! Right to get and keep housing.
a lot of money has been given to regions to make this happen - what is haltons plan?
Halton - how many shelters do you have ? Lighthouse and ???
For the rural areas- what financial housing supports are you giving to towns ?
What affordable builds are happening ? Renovation programs to keep people housed or assist with 2nd suits.
What programs are being offered: subsidy? RGI? Or rent up? COHB - how did Halton connect people to this benefit?
What are your plans to tackle the housing waitlist?

The town needs more low income housing available to families in town. I’m a single mother and cannot afford to have an apartment or house by myself. The rent in this town is ridiculously high and no family on a single income can afford it.

We have large old industrial buildings that are on the west side of the Georgetown train station that could be knocked down and the whole area converted to affordable housing. Why doesn't the town approach the owner of the land and buildings with a committee and get them started on this sooner than later.

We are in DESPERATE need of Seniors apartments in Acton! Presently, long time residents have to move out of town. I know of one case whereby a Senior has been on a waiting list since 2016 and are presently number 50 on the list. So that likely equals 10 more years if you are lucky. This is very sad. This has been going on for many years.

I work at the Georgetown hospital, serving my community. Despite having a great job, and a university degree, rent eats up 60% of my take home pay. It seems I’ll never be able to afford to buy here, and I worry about being completely priced out of the rental market within 5 years.

Affordable housing means that the people that serve our community can live here too. Patients regularly ask me if I live here. It’s important to them. Also, in the context of COVID it’s much safer if people are living/working in the same communities.

Affordable housing means I spend 30-40% of my budget on housing and have a safe, appropriately sized place to live. That other money can be invested in my community- I’d have money to spend at local restaurants and businesses. I’d have money to donate to CASHH and the hospital foundation.

Affordable housing means my hockey loving kid can play rec hockey. It means we can afford healthier food. It means I don’t have to sit up at night worrying that we’ll be homeless- despite my good job - in 5 years.

I would love to see single dwelling units, 1 bedroom & bachelor size condo units, for single adults & single seniors so that they can stay in Halton Hills. As well units that are affordable for adults who have 1 income & seniors who have pension income only. It's unaffordable to have one income & buy or rent in Halton Hills.

Condos that are basic - not "luxury" which are always overpriced. I want to own my space, but can't due to lack of affordable options. Instead, I'm paying $1350 (which is over 50% of my income) in Acton for a 600 sq ft apartment. I want to be able to put that money towards a reasonably priced condo that I will own.

My daughter recently separated from her husband and has 2 children. She can not find any housing in Halton, not to mention affordable housing. I was a single mother of 3 girls and searched for 3 years to get my family affordable housing. Thankfully a wonderful man who lived in BC owned a house in Georgetown and rented to myself and my kids, but the town did nothing to help nor did the co-ops in this town.

Affordable housing in Halton Hills would be housing which can be afforded by a person paying no more than 30% of their regular income for housing. There should be a mixture of options for singles, doubles, and families. The options should be located in such a way to produce various housing options in each neighbourhood, rather than segregating affordable housing all to one part of the municipality. I was involved in establishing the St. Andrew's Affordable housing project on lands owned by St. Andrew's United Church.
