    The construction for the replacement playground at Smith Drive Parkette has begun.

    Town staff began the removal of the existing equipment this morning and will be removing the playground curbs, surfacing and a portion of the parks pathway this afternoon and tomorrow.

    The Town has engaged with a cotnractor, who will be working onsite over the coming month to adjust and prepare the new play area, including the installation of new curbing, an accessible ramp. safety surfacing and a new walkway.

    A separate playground installer will also be on site to install the new equipment as well as the new benches.

    The playground is expected to be re-opened in early October.

    Town staff will be planting the new deciduous trees in late October as part of their fall planting program.

    Thank you again for your continued support and feedback throughout this process.

    The design of the replacement playground at Smith Drive Parkette has been finalized.

    The Recreation & Parks Department would like to thank you for your continued support in the design.

    Following the abundant input received through the public consultation, we have worked to incorporate the features and elements you as a neighbourhood have identified as priorities, into a final design.

    As such, the project will include;

    • A new playground structure with formalized play area, accessible ramp and engineered wood fibre safety surfacing.
    • A new pathway in front of the new play area.
    • 2 new benches along the new pathway, adjacent to the play area.
    • Additional trees to be planted around the playground and seating areas.

    The final design strikes a balance between, toddler, junior and senior user needs, offering a range of developmentally appropriate activities within one accessible structure.

    Through the public consultation there were some questions regarding the possibility of having larger park features such as basketball courts or splash pad elements included as part of this project. Please note that the Town's standard is to include these larger park features within community level parks, where adequate facilities and infrastructure are available, and would not be considered for the design of a parkette.

    Our anticipated timeline is for park construction to commence late summer with the tree planting being completed fall 2018.

    Thank you again for your continued support and feedback throughout this process.
